It was then that one of his friends suggested robbing his workplace, a Subway sandwich shop. He gave him all the details and handed him a .45 gun.
Dale told his friends he would kill John William Zeltner Jr., a Subway employee and reportedly Dale’s friend. He did what he said. He killed John by shooting six bullets in his back and head and robbed $400.
Six days after the event, one of his friends tipped off the police, and he was convicted on February 26, 1991. He was sentenced to death, and later, his sentence was decreased to life.

In episode 2 of the series, Dale revealed that he knew John and they were friends. John was gay, and he was blackmailing him into a homosexual relationship. That’s why he killed him.
